 Job Description

Succulent Gardens is seeking an exceptional President to lead and manage the company’s business in Castroville, CA.  You will be responsible for the existing 2 acres of greenhouse succulent plant material and 1 acre of outdoor succulent plant material.. You will report directly to the owner and manage the sales team, the production team, and all aspects of the business..

 Responsibilities

General

  • Leading team toward accomplishment of sales objectives, goals and profitability targets
  • Managing the nursery’s inventory, quality and product mix
  • Developing and training excellent team supervisors
  • Scheduling and maintaining appropriate staffing of the sales and production  team

Operations

  • Developing business standards, management practices and training programs to ensure proper inventory levels and quality nursery plants, specifically by ensuring that the production  team
    • meets production and stock planting targets, and
    • uses proper horticultural techniques, including planting, watering, weeding, pruning, pest control, and plant identification
  • Maintaining and developing production stock and plant material sourcing relationships adequate to meet current and future plant inventory requirements
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly work environment
  • Overseeing adherence to safety and compliance requirements

Planning

  • Maintaining an inventory management system
  • Setting monthly planting, stock and other production goals based on sales projections and forecasts
  • Identifying growth areas for the business and identifying the resources needed to achieve that growth.

Sales

  • Develops business standards, management practices and training programs to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, specifically by ensuring the sale team
    • is responsive,
    • communicates clearly and effectively,
    • demonstrates a strong knowledge of the plant material,
    • pulls high quality orders, and
    • accurately and promptly bills customers
  • Develops relationship with key nursery customers in order to maintain customer satisfaction
  • Manages merchandising and facility layout to improve customer experience and nursery operational efficiencies

P&L

  • Connect decisions at the nursery to results in the P&L
  • Manage to gross profit targets and handle bonus planning for employees
  • Balance growth and investments required with annual financial targets

 Job Requirements

  • Passionate about sustainable, waterwise  agriculture
  • BS degree in agriculture or the equivalent
  • Prior head or assistant grower experience in a commercial-scale agriculture company
  • Understanding of P&L and ability to manage to financial metrics
  • Familiarity with greenhouse practices, propagation, pesticides, Integrated Pest Management, fertility, soil management and best irrigation practices
  • Pesticide Applicator’s License (may be obtained upon hire)
  • Background in production planning and inventory     management
  • Preference given to a bilingual candidate   (English/Spanish)
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Must be comfortable in Microsoft Office and internet applications. While a strong horticulture background and experience is required, being successful in this role will likely require up to half time in the office and on computers.
  • Successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization, juggle multiple objectives simultaneously, and resolve routine issues independently with the judgment to escalate  issues  as required

Overview:

  1. Growers, a wholesale bedding plant grower located in Southern California; it is a division of Armstrong Garden Centers. We operate three growing facilities in Santa Paula, Fallbrook and Bermuda Dunes, CA and deliver throughout California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and into Texas.

Armstrong Growers is looking to fill a position in their new Northern CA territor. We sell only to the Independent Garden Centers including Ace, True Value and other independent hardware chains as well as commercial landscapers, resorts, amusement parks, HOA’s and Municipalities. Territory Details:

This territory has been operating for over a year and has doubled in size with tremendous opportunities and expectations for continued growth. The territory is valued currently at about $1.2M with potential to grow to more than $1.5m. Greenhouse and Propagation Manager 

SUMMARY Directs and coordinates activities of the Greenhouse and Containers Department in propagating and producing plant materials for field and container use and producing container-grown trees for commercial growers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITEIS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews production orders or schedules to ascertain product data such as types, quantities, and specifications of products and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan department operations.
  • Plans production operations, establishing priorities and sequences for propagation and production activities.
  • Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational and production problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
  • Develops or revises standard operational and working practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Resolves worker grievances or submits unsettled grievances to Human Resources Department for action.
  • Compiles, stores, and retrieves production data.
  • Produce hardwood and softwood rootstock cuttings from mother plant material.
  • Determine plant growing conditions, set up planting and care procedures and schedules.
  • Manage the movement of the materials in and out of the facilities, inventory levels and other specific information for that material (ie parentage).
  • Assist in long-term planning of greenhouse and container department.
  • Perform timing, growing and material/product trials.
  • Collect, compile and report results from trials to appropriate personnel and update databases.
  • Manage staff - schedules, tasks, training, etc.
  • Attend regular meetings with the other Production Managers.
  • Insure phytosanitary procedures are updated and implemented.
  • Manage plant health through irrigation, nutrition and spray programs.
  • Manage and maintain infrastructure for greenhouse and container department.
  • Identify plants as well as problems, such as mixes, diseases and insect pests.

Nursery Sales Position - Wegman's Nursery, Redwood City

Wegman’s Nursery, the Peninsula’s premier retail garden center, has a nursery sales position open. We are looking for a friendly and experienced full-time nursery sales person who is motivated and a self-starter. Since providing excellent customer service is the hallmark of Wegman’s Nursery, applicants should be passionate about helping customers. The primary focus of this position is to assist customers in selecting garden products. A CCNP designation is desirable; however, an applicant with a horticultural education or plant knowledge will also be considered. Production Yard Manager
Objective: To grow and care for quality plant material and to supervise maintenance of a clean, neat facility in support of our annual sales goal.
Reports to: Jon Reelhorn (President)

Support from: Production Grower, Plant Health Supervisor
Supervises: Facility production staff
Responsibilities:

 

  1. Perform various aspects of nursery fieldwork, including pruning, watering, fertilizing, staking, weeding, consolidating and placement of plants in the field.
  2. Perform maintenance on all aspects of the yard, including irrigation repairs, planting machine maintenance, and overall maintenance of the production yard structures.
  3. Advise the Plant Health Supervisor of pest and disease issues in the production yard. Spray herbicides/pesticides as needed.
  4. Supervise and implement the watering in the production yards coordinating with the other staff members.
  5. Supervise fertilizer application in the production yard working in unison with the Production Grower.
  6. Supervise planting crew, proper technique and procedures on the planting machine and implement proper placement of plants in the nursery after planting.
  7. Document changes in availability of plant material (ready date changes, dumps, cutbacks) and forward them to the Inventory Control Specialist.
  8. Coordinate and perform delivery transfers to and from other facilities.
  9. Coordinate receiving of plant material from outside growers, assuring proper paperwork flow to the office.
  10. Tour the nursery each morning to pick up fallen plants and to spot problem areas.
  11. Keep nursery free of weeds, litter, and clutter.
  12. Support will call orders and customers when needed.
  13. Other duties as necessary.

Nursery Production Planning Manager- Perris, CA

Village Nurseries is seeking a Nursery Production Planning Manager. This full time, salaried position reports directly to the VP of Southern Operations and is based at our facility in Perris, CA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Purchasing Green Goods according to Schedules
  • Developing pricing agreements & delivery schedules
  • Developing Budgetary Templates and Forecasting
  • Inventory Monitoring & Tracking Capabilities related to propagation manufacturing
  • Overseeing the purchase of liners and green goods. Assisting submission & tracking of Village liner, plug, bare-root orders & submitting associated new code opening request. Establishing liner quality standards, order routines and monitor scheduled delivery dates.
  • Manages production planning staff and scheduling of material flow to meet production schedules and customer requirements.
  • Occasionally travels to other facilities in the Southern California region.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and working knowledge of the horticultural trade preferred.
  • Experience in Inventory Scheduling and scheduling concepts & theory.
  • Valid CA Driver License
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred
  • Intermediate in advanced analytical skills related to data summary, analysis, reporting statistics & problem solving.
  • Ability to read and analyze manufacturing reports
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university; or five to 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
