The Operations Manager is responsible for management and logistics for the day-to-day operations of the nursery and plays a key role in the overall success of the organization.  The Operations Manager reports to the General Manager and works closely with ownership and management to improve growth of sales and profitability of the nursery while maintaining product quality and customer service standards.       
Primary responsibilities:
  • Assess, identify, develop and implement operational improvements related to productivity, efficiency, quality and/or safety
  • Manage the employee process from beginning to end, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, leaves, layoffs and terminations; handle employee relations and employee communications
  • Manage scheduling of employees, assignment of duties, forecasting of labor needs and record-keeping regarding labor usage
  • Ensure compliance with, and provide onsite assistance for, company human resources policies and processes (i.e. payroll, leave management)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable labor laws and wage and hour guidelines, Cal OSHA, safety training and harassment prevention training, including required reporting
  • Manages safety and loss prevention, including compliance, training, regular safety meetings, accident/injury investigation and managing worker’s comp claims and return to work programs
  • Manage transportation logistics, including managing drivers, driver qualification files, scheduling, drug and alcohol program, acquisition of vehicles, rental driver staffing, maintenance and repair schedules and routing assistance
  • Direct and coordinate customer sales ordering, inventory, shipping, purchase order and supply ordering processes to ensure quality standards are being met

Qualifications/Requirements for the successful candidate:
  • BS or MS degree in Management, Business or a related field and 7+ years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience; nursery management or related industry experience a plus
  • Ability to lead and manage people and to execute at both a strategic and tactical level; proven ability to motivate, develop and direct the work of others
  • Strong business acumen with excellent problem-solving, decision-making, negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization and time-management skills

Greenhouse and Propogation Manager - Fowler Nurseries, Inc., Newcastle

SUMMARY
Directs and coordinates activities of the Greenhouse and Containers Department in propagating and producing plant materials for field and container use and producing container-grown trees for commercial growers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Reviews production orders or schedules to ascertain product data such as types, quantities, and specifications of products and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan department operations.
  • Plans production operations, establishing priorities and sequences for propagation and production activities.
  • Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational and production problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
  • Develops or revises standard operational and working practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Resolves worker grievances or submits unsettled grievances to Human Resources Department for action.
  • Compiles, stores, and retrieves production data.
  • Produce hardwood and softwood rootstock cuttings from mother plant material.
  • Determine plant growing conditions, set up planting and care procedures and schedules.
  • Manage the movement of the materials in and out of the facilities, inventory levels and other specific information for that material (ie parentage).
  • Assist in long-term planning of greenhouse and container department.
  • Perform timing, growing and material/product trials.
  • Collect, compile and report results from trials to appropriate personnel and update databases.
  • Manage staff - schedules, tasks, training, etc.
  • Attend regular meetings with the other Production Managers.
  • Insure phytosanitary procedures are updated and implemented.
  • Manage plant health through irrigation, nutrition and spray programs.
  • Manage and maintain infrastructure for greenhouse and container department.
  • Identify plants as well as problems, such as mixes, diseases and insect pests.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Nursery Sales Position - Wegman's Nursery, Redwood City

Wegman’s Nursery, the Peninsula’s premier retail garden center, has a nursery sales position open. We are looking for a friendly and experienced full-time nursery sales person who is motivated and a self-starter. Since providing excellent customer service is the hallmark of Wegman’s Nursery, applicants should be passionate about helping customers. If you enjoy gardening and are responsible, energetic, and customer-service oriented then our nursery is the place for you.

The primary focus of this position is to assist customers in selecting garden products. A CCNP designation is desirable; however, an applicant with a horticultural education or plant knowledge will also be considered. Our nursery sales professional should be comfortable working outside year round. Sales experience is a plus.

Horticulturist and Landscape Architect - UC Davis, Davis


Both positions below will be part of a larger team working to make the campus landscape more beautiful, sustainable, engaging, and reflective of the unique academic work of UC Davis. The GATEways Horticulturist position will work on the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden team and focus on the creation, renovation, and care of Arboretum plant collections and GATEways academic engagement gardens. In addition to collaborating with a variety of faculty, staff, and community members, this position will lead volunteer groups and mentor student interns. Production Yard Manager - Belmont Nursery - Fresno

Objective: To grow and care for quality plant material and to supervise maintenance of a clean, neat facility in support of our annual sales goal.
Reports to:  Jon Reelhorn (President)

Support from: Production Grower, Plant Health Supervisor
Supervises:  Facility production staff
Responsibilities:
  1. Perform various aspects of nursery fieldwork, including pruning, watering, fertilizing, staking, weeding, consolidating and placement of plants in the field.
  2. Perform maintenance on all aspects of the yard, including irrigation repairs, planting machine maintenance, and overall maintenance of the production yard structures.
  3. Advise the Plant Health Supervisor of pest and disease issues in the production yard.  Spray herbicides/pesticides as needed.
  4. Supervise and implement the watering in the production yards coordinating with the other staff members. 
  5. Supervise fertilizer application in the production yard working in unison with the Production Grower.
  6. Supervise planting crew, proper technique and procedures on the planting machine and implement proper placement of plants in the nursery after planting.
  7. Document changes in availability of plant material (ready date changes, dumps, cutbacks) and forward them to the Inventory Control Specialist. 
  8. Coordinate and perform delivery transfers to and from other facilities. 
  9. Coordinate receiving of plant material from outside growers, assuring proper paperwork flow to the office.
  10. Tour the nursery each morning to pick up fallen plants and to spot problem areas.
  11. Keep nursery free of weeds, litter, and clutter.
  12. Support will call orders and customers when needed.
  13. Other duties as necessary.

Nursery Professional - Sloat Garden Center, Marin & San Francisco

Sloat Garden Center is hiring nursery professionals to fill openings at our stores in San Francisco and Marin. California Certified Nurserypersons have the advantage of experience and knowledge which dictates a higher starting wage than their peers. In addition, Sloat Garden Center pays a yearly bonus of $1200 dollars if the CCNP status is maintained. Further, we will pay your yearly registration. The CCNP status qualifies the candidate for buying positions within the store as well as more responsibility than a regular Nurseryperson. Sloat Garden Center generally promotes from within to management and assistant manager positions. Sloat Garden Center encourages our team members to utilize their creativity for display and merchandising while giving them the autonomy to so. So, while the job of a certified nurseryperson is physically demanding, it is also creatively rewarding. You must have the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time and in all types of weather. You must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively. Weekend availability is a must.  A clean driving record and current license is beneficial. Math sufficient to operate a cash register, handle money, and use a calculator is essential.
