Production Yard Manager - Belmont Nursery - Fresno

Objective:

To grow and care for quality plant material and to supervise maintenance of a clean, neat facility in support of our annual sales goal.

Reports to:  Jon Reelhorn (President), Support from: Production Grower, Plant Health Supervisor

Supervises:  Facility production staff

Responsibilities:

  1. Perform various aspects of nursery fieldwork, including pruning, watering, fertilizing, staking, weeding, consolidating and placement of plants in the field.
  2. Perform maintenance on all aspects of the yard, including irrigation repairs, planting machine maintenance, and overall maintenance of the production yard structures.
  3. Advise the Plant Health Supervisor of pest and disease issues in the production yard.  Spray herbicides/pesticides as needed.
  4. Supervise and implement the watering in the production yards coordinating with the other staff members. 
  5. Supervise fertilizer application in the production yard working in unison with the Production Grower.
  6. Supervise planting crew, proper technique and procedures on the planting machine and implement proper placement of plants in the nursery after planting.
  7. Document changes in availability of plant material (ready date changes, dumps, cutbacks) and forward them to the Inventory Control Specialist. 
  8. Coordinate and perform delivery transfers to and from other facilities. 
  9. Coordinate receiving of plant material from outside growers, assuring proper paperwork flow to the office.
  10. Tour the nursery each morning to pick up fallen plants and to spot problem areas.
  11. Keep nursery free of weeds, litter, and clutter.
  12. Support will call orders and customers when needed.
  13. Other duties as necessary.

Plant Buyer - Central Valley - St. Helena



Central Valley is a locally owned and operated business with five locations throughout the North Bay. We have been in business since 1955 and have grown to be one of the largest suppliers of building and agriculture materials of its kind in Northern California. We are looking for highly motivated, customer-focused individual for our St. Helena Garden Center, located in the heart of the Napa Valley.
 
At Central Valley, the Plant Buyer is responsible for purchasing, inventory documentation and special order tracking of live plant goods. They maintain product catalogues, price lists, and announcements, and sells floor-stocked products to meet Company objectives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Purchases stock items and for stock and special orders.
  • Maintains plant pricing and compares costs between vendors.
  • Coordinates all Plant Special Orders for their assigned categories.
  • Keeps accurate files of Plant Special Orders.
  • Pulls Plant Special Orders from Plant Stock Orders.
  • Notifies customer of Plant Special Order arrival. 
  • Keeps current on the market, market trends, and industry developments in the gardening industry.
  • Maintains current, in-depth knowledge of all the Company’s products and their applications.
  • Responds to customer inquiries promptly.
  • Follows up on sales leads.
  • Works harmoniously and productively with other CV employees and other departments in fulfilling Company commitments.
  • Produces timely, accurate sales and other reports.
  • Understands costs, pricing, and overhead as percent of sales.
  • Recommends input for Company merchandising targets, pricing, new products, services,
  • Develops effective product knowledge of all areas of the garden department, and becomes cross-trained to be able to provide the maximum benefits and service to the Company’s Customers.
  • Oversees orderly stock layout and maintains safety and cleanliness of the department.
  • Assists in the proper receiving and stocking of plants.
  • Delivers product if necessary.
  • Analyzes and takes care of customer needs.  Serves the customer on the floor when necessary. Provide customer with appropriate receipt for each transaction.
  • Locates necessary products.
  • Quotes pre-established prices to customers.
  • Attends store meetings and training sessions, help train new Garden Representative or Plant Buyers.
  • Maintains up-to-date information necessary to run and operate the Floor area successfully and notifies Garden Department Manager of any problems.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
  • Exhibits Brand Behaviors consistently.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Plant knowledge and identification of landscape plants appropriate for growing in Napa Valley
  • Horticultural knowledge – plant care, soil, fertilizer, pest ID and control.
  • Landscape/garden design basics
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • 4 year degree in Horticulture or related field
  • Or 4 years of work in a retail or wholesale garden center/nursery
  • Buying/purchasing experience is preferred, but not required

Sloat Garden Center is hiring nursery professionals to fill openings at our stores in San Francisco and Marin. California Certified Nurserypersons have the advantage of experience and knowledge which dictates a higher starting wage than their peers. In addition, Sloat Garden Center pays a yearly bonus of $1200 dollars if the CCNP status is maintained. Further, we will pay your yearly registration.
