Research Grants

An Invitation to Apply

The California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers is seeking to fund research in several areas. We invite you to submit a proposal for a research project pertinent to the production, post-harvest handling and marketing of nursery crops. Nursery crops include shrubs and trees produced in containers, field-grown deciduous trees and rose bushes, annual bedding plants, foliage and flowering pot plants and succulent plants.

Projects of Interest to the Nursery Industry The CANGC is specifically looking for primary investigators to research in the following sectors of the industry:

Sudden Oak Death
  • Diagnostic protocol for SOD
  • Treatment protocol for Phytophthora ramorum.
  • Risk analysis if SOD positives in nurseries - necessary to destroy entire lots?

Weed Control

  • Nematodes and weed control in field grown and containerized stock without methyl bromide.
  • Sterilization of potting media.
  • Weed Control in the Nursery Industry

Exotic Pests

  • Weed management, insect, mite management and disease management of exotic pests (glassy wing sharpshooter, whitefly, fire ants, SOD) on nursery products.
  • Exotic pests and diseases of immediate concern
  1. Response plan to exotic pests in the urban incubator - especially early detection.

Irrigation and Evapotranspiration

  • Control of Irrigation and Storm Run off
  • Evapotranspiration rates in new landscapes.
  • Evapotranspiration standards through out the state of California
  • Improving irrigation efficiency in irrigation in the landscape.
  • Comparative value of landscape plants, i.e. improvements of the environment and reduction of water use.

Miscellaneous Issues

  • Interpretation of lab reports (tissue analysis) as they pertain to field and container nursery production.
  • Insect and Mite Control
  • Bacterial Disease Management
  • Making nurseries environmentally friendly. "Green Wholesale Nursery"
  • Validation of regulatory standards
  • Facilitation of intrastate, interstate and international shipment of nursery stock. (Not SOD specific).

Funding Criteria
If you are a qualified researcher at a university or college, or affiliated with another research institution, we'd like to hear from you. Projects are usually funded at the rate of $1,000-$15,000 per year for 1-3 years. Grants do not include administrative overhead, support of principal investigators' salary, or capital expenditures. Projects that enable rapid translation of results into nursery practice receive high consideration.

Proposal Guidelines
Proposals with accompanying application form should contain the following.

  • Descriptive title
  • Evaluation of importance to the nursery industry
  • Background information
  • Research objectives
  • Procedures
  • Duration and schedule of work
  • Personnel and literature cited
Deadline
The deadline for proposals to reach the CANGC office is November 30. Proposals are reviewed by the CANGC Research Committee. You will be notified of action on your proposal by April 1 each year.

Current Grant Recipients
If you are a current grant recipient and your research will continue into the next CANGC fiscal year (April-March), you must reapply each year.

Follow-Up Report
Successful grantees will be asked to submit an annual oral and/or written report of progress and a final report of accomplishments. Failure to do so will jeopardize future funding of this and other projects submitted by the principal investigator(s).
